Sustainability

Key Greens have a number of sustainable practices in place and greatly benefit from reusing plants and recycling woodland materials. These eco-friendly strategies not only reduce waste but also enhance the production’s environmental footprint, making it more aligned with green filmmaking practices. Here's how these strategies can be implemented effectively:

1- Reusing Plants

Recycling Greenery Across Projects: Instead of sourcing new plants for every production, Key Greens can repurpose plants from past projects. Many plants can be carefully stored, maintained, and reused on different sets, allowing for a more sustainable approach to greenery management. For example, potted plants, trees, and shrubs used on one set could be moved to another set or location for future use.

On-Set Plant Care: By implementing a proper plant care system—including watering, rotation, and proper lighting—plants can thrive longer, reducing the need to buy new ones for future productions. Reusing the same plants across multiple sets helps ensure that the set dressing remains vibrant without excessive waste

2- Recycling Woodland Materials in various ways:

Repurposing Natural Materials: Fallen branches, logs and other woodland materials can be sourced sustainably and used as set dressing elements. After the production wraps, these materials can be cleaned, treated, and stored for future use, rather than being discarded. By keeping materials in circulation, sets become more sustainable while helping to preserve natural resources.

Upcycling Natural Materials: Materials such as logs, bark, and stumps can be creatively reimagined and used in different settings. For example, a fallen tree stump used as part of a forest scene can later be incorporated into a rustic cabin or garden set. The transformation of natural materials allows for greater creativity while ensuring minimal waste.

Collaborating with Local Forestry Projects: For film sets that require large quantities of natural materials, collaborating with local forestry programs or sustainable wood suppliers ensures that the materials come from responsibly managed forests. Additionally, after a production, any surplus materials can be returned to the supplier for repurposing or replanting, further supporting ecological balance.

3- Composting and Green Waste Management:

Any plant material that can’t be reused or repurposed should be composted rather than discarded. Leaves, soil, and plant debris from the set can be composted to create nutrient-rich soil for future plantings or gardening projects. This reduces landfill waste and promotes a circular approach to greenery management.

4- Supporting Ecologi:

To celebrate the end of each production Key Greens have had the pleasure of being involved in, the company plants 50 trees with the charity ‘Ecologi’ to help offset our carbon footprint.

5- Sustainable Sourcing and using Eco-Conscious Materials:

From biodegradable plant pots to sustainably produced soil and fertilizers, choosing eco-conscious materials ensures that every aspect of plant and woodland management on set adheres to sustainable principles.

6- Educating and Promoting Green Practice by training Crew Members:

Key Greens feels strongly about educating all their crew about sustainable practices. By ensuring that all team members understand the value of reusing materials, composting waste, and minimizing consumption, the set can become a model for environmental responsibility.

By integrating these sustainable practices into their workflow, Key Greens can reduce waste, conserve resources, and contribute to a greener film industry overall. Reusing plants and recycling woodland materials not only enhances a production’s environmental responsibility but also adds an authentic, organic element to the sets that can elevate the final product.
